THESE VERY DRY CONDITIONS THROUGHOUT SEPTEMBER, COMBINED WITH ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES, HAVE EXASPERATED THE FLASH DROUGHT ALREADY IN PLACE, WITH EXTREME (D3) AND SEVERE (D2) DROUGHT CONDITIONS NOW AFFECTING MUCH OF THE REGION. THROUGH THE FIRST THREE AND A HALF WEEKS OF SEPTEMBER, ONLY SEVERAL HUNDRETHS OF AN INCH UP TO A QUARTER OF AN INCH HAS FALLEN ALONG A LINE FROM TYLER TEXAS TO BOSSIER CITY
LOUISIANA, AS WELL AS PORTIONS OF SOUTHWEST ARKANSAS. MONTH TO DATE
RAINFALL AMOUNTS THUS FAR RANGE FROM A HALF INCH TO AN INCH ELSEWHERE ACROSS EAST TEXAS, NORTHCENTRAL LOUISIANA, SOUTHEAST OKLAHOMA, AND THE REMAINDER OF SOUTHWEST ARKANSAS, WITH ISOLATED LOCATIONS HAVING RECEIVED NEAR TWO INCHES OR MORE. SHOULD NO ADDITIONAL RAINFALL BE RECORDED THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH, MANY LOCATIONS WILL RANK AS HAVING ONE OF THE TOP 5 DRIEST SEPTEMBERS ON RECORD. AS A RESULT, EXTREME (D3) DROUGHT CONDITIONS HAVE DEVELOPED OVER SOUTHERN MCCURTAIN COUNTY OKLAHOMA, WESTERN LITTLE RIVER COUNTY ARKANSAS, AS WELL AS WESTERN BOWIE, MORRIS, CASS, MARION, AND NORTHERN HARRISON COUNTIES IN EAST TEXAS. A SMALL AREA OF EXTREME DROUGHT CONDITIONS HAVE ALSO DEVELOPED OVER SOUTHERN CHEROKEE, NACOGDOCHES, AND WESTERN SHELBY COUNTIES IN EAST TEXAS. IN NORTH LOUISIANA, EXTREME DROUGHT CONDITIONS HAVE DEVELOPED OVER CADDO, BOSSIER, DESOTO, RED RIVER, WEBSTER, CLAIBORNE, BIENVILLE, LINCOLN, UNION, AND OUACHITA PARISHES, WITH THIS AREA HAVING EXPANDED INTO COLUMBIA AND UNION COUNTIES IN SOUTHCENTRAL ARKANSAS AS WELL. SEVERE (D2) DROUGHT CONDITIONS HAVE ALSO EXPANDED AND SURROUND THE EXISTING EXTREME DROUGHT CONDITIONS OVER THE REMAINDER OF EAST TEXAS AND NORTH LOUISIANA, AS WELL AS CENTRAL MCCURTAIN COUNTY OKLAHOMA AND FOR THE REMAINDER OF LITTLE RIVER, MILLER, AND LAFAYETTE COUNTIES IN SOUTHWEST ARKANSAS. MODERATE (D1) DROUGHT CONDITIONS ARE IN PLACE ACROSS NORTHERN MCCURTAIN COUNTY OKLAHOMA, AS WELL AS SEVIER, HOWARD, HEMPSTEAD, AND NEVADA COUNTIES IN SOUTHWEST ARKANSAS. MULTIPLE COUNTY/PARISH BURN BANS REMAIN IN EFFECT ACROSS MUCH OF THE REGION, WITH THE REMAINING COUNTIES AND PARISHES LIKELY BEING ADDED TO THIS LIST IN THE NEAR FUTURE AS THE FIRE DANGER REMAINS HIGH AND ONLY MINIMAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS ARE EXPECTED THROUGH AT LEAST THE FIRST WEEK OF OCTOBER.
