"Exceptional Drought" Prevails At Natchitoches, La. per U. S. Drought Monitor...
(June - August 2011) --- Exceptional drought status prevailed during this time period according to the U. S. Drought Monitor for the City of Natchitoches, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. Area water bodies fell to very low levels including Cane River Lake at downtown Natchitoches, La. as shown below during October 2011. (Natchitoches, LA) -- After a long hot summer with very little rainfall over several months and the U. S. Drought Monitor drought severity status at "exceptional drought" for Natchitoches Parish, LA on October 25, 2011 Cane River Lake became a victim of the 2011 drought with low water levels being recorded. The water level was also decreased by excessive farming irrigation due to drought conditions in Natchitoches Parish, LA. On Sept. 3, Tropical Storm Lee's rainbands began to soak Natchitoches Parish providing some drought relief. The southeastern portion of the parish received the most rainfall from this storm system. However, the drought continued & worsened again. Very little rainfall occurred in early to mid October. By October 25, 2011, the official National Weather Service stage for Cane River Lake at downtown Natchitoches, LA was near 1.70 ft stage using a staff river gage. The level is much below normal.

...MUCH BELOW NORMAL RAINFALL AND ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES DURING MARCH AND EARLY APRIL HAS RESULTED IN EXTREME DROUGHT CONDITIONS ACROSS MUCH OF THE FOUR STATE REGION...
SYNOPSIS...
MARCH AND EARLY APRIL CONTINUED THE TREND SINCE FEBRUARY OF MUCH BELOW NORMAL RAINFALL. IN FACT...ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES HAVE BEEN OBSERVED DURING THIS TIME AS WELL...AS WE ENTER WHAT IS TYPICALLY THE RAINY SEASON ACROSS THE FOUR STATE REGION. MANY RECORD HIGH AND HIGHEST MINIMUM TEMPERATURES HAVE BEEN SET DURING THIS TIME...WITH WHAT LITTLE TOPSOIL MOISTURE LEFT DRYING OUT DURING THIS PROLONGED WARM AND WINDY TIME. MONTHLY RAINFALL TOTALS SINCE THE FIRST OF MARCH HAVE RANGED FROM A HALF INCH TO AN INCH ACROSS MOST OF EAST TEXAS...SOUTHEAST OKLAHOMA...EXTREME SOUTHERN ARKANSAS...AND THE SOUTHERN SECTIONS OF NORTHCENTRAL LOUISIANA...TO UP TO TWO INCHES ELSEWHERE ACROSS THE NORTHERN SECTIONS OF SOUTHWEST ARKANSAS AND ALONG THE INTERSTATE 20 CORRIDOR OF EAST TEXAS AND NORTH LOUISIANA. MOST OF THE REGION HAVE OBSERVED LESS THEN 25% OF NORMAL RAINFALL DURING THE LAST 6 WEEKS...WITH SOME LOCATIONS ACROSS EXTREME SOUTHEAST OKLAHOMA AND SOUTHWEST ARKANSAS OBSERVING LESS THAN 10% OF NORMAL RAINFALL. THIS HAS RESULTED IN CONTINUED DETERIORATION OF DROUGHT CONDITIONS AREAWIDE...WITH EXTREME (D3) DROUGHT CONDITIONS IN PLACE OVER ALL EXCEPT THE EASTERN SECTIONS OF NORTHCENTRAL LOUISIANA...EAST OF A WEST MONROE...TO OLLA LINE...WHERE SEVERE (D2) DROUGHT CONDITIONS PERSIST.
AGRICULTURAL IMPACTS.
MUCH BELOW NORMAL RAINFALL...AND ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES EXPERIENCED DURING MARCH AND THE FIRST WEEK OF APRIL HAS RESULTED IN VERY DRY SOIL MOISTURE CONDITIONS AREAWIDE. PASTURES HAVE BEGUN TO GREEN UP...BUT NEEDED MOISTURE FOR GROWTH. LAKES AND PONDS CONTINUED TO RECEDE. PRODUCERS ARE STILL PROVIDING SUPPLEMENTAL FEED TO THEIR LIVESTOCK.
